The Crisis and Renewal of Biblical Interpretation

Online - Mondays - 5:00 - 6:30PM ET - MBI

Price: $990.00

This course explores the challenges and possibilities of interpreting Scripture in the modern age, considering the tensions between historical-critical methods and the theological reading of the Church. Using Knox and Lüdemann as exemplars, the course shows how the same historical-critical method can lead scholars in very different directions, illustrating the diversity of outcomes and ongoing questions in modern exegesis.

Students then move beyond purely historical methods to consider the recovery of allegorical and spiritual senses, attentive to the life of the Church and the transformative vision of Scripture. The course emphasizes how Catholic reading, informed by contemporary scholarship and anthropological insights, offers a distinctive path for penetrating the deeper, spiritual dimensions of the biblical text.
