Old Testament Violence in Mythology, History, & Interpretation

Online - Mon/Wed 7:00 - 8:30PM ET

This course examines some of the most primitive sections of the Old Testament and illuminates, in light of Christ’s incarnation, what are often seen as merely archaic and indefensibly violent episodes in the Scriptures. The stories of Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac, Zipporah and Gershom, are among those biblical passages which the Holy Spirit intended for us to know and understand as crucial elements of Christ’s redemption, yet they are so often misunderstood or glossed over. Through deep and unencumbered analysis, students come to a new understanding of what lies beneath the surface of these barbaric acts of violence in the Old Testament, and they will come to appreciate what they reveal about humanity, our fallen nature, and the necessity of salvation.
